If everyone knows that you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar or that you get one chance to make a first impression, then why is that not always the case in both the public and private sector?

For any new City Manager or Department Director, the simplest way to make a positive impact for the community or your company is to provide customer-service training for all employees, especially those positions that interact with citizens on a daily basis.

Here are five simple ways to improve your customer service:

  2. Answer the phone. Surprise someone by speaking to them. Voicemails and phone trees frustrate all of us.
  3. Say hello. Address someone first. Make them feel welcome.
  4. See the person in front of you and ask about them. They are coming to you because they need your help. Ask how to help them.
  5. Remember the rule “Do unto others.” Think of how you would want to be treated. That is your best barometer for how to approach the public.
